Sustainable Dance Club: Generate electricity as you dance!

"At the club you are not just consuming energy, you are also giving it back”

Have fun, dance like crazy, and capture all that energy that you spill out on Saturday nights. This is the final outcome of the Sustainable Dance Club.

WATT, the first sustainable dance club was founded in 2006 in Rotterdam by Enviu ‘Innovators in Sustainability’, and Doll Architects. The concept is rather original and the technology very promising.

The core of this eco-club concept is the energy-generating dance floor. An advanced electric motor, converts the movement of dancers into electricity, which is then used to power the lights and interactive visuals inside the club. Thus, at the club you are not just “consuming energy, you are also giving it back” [1].

Although the amount of energy produced is only 5 to 20 Watts of power per person depending on weight and activity in the dance floor, this is just the first generation of electric platforms. In years to come we might see this technology become more efficient and platforms could also be developed for places of high traffic concentration such as plazas, festivals, stations, and airports.
