EcoCab, free green-rides in downtown Toronto

EcoCab 11

The city of Toronto welcomed with enthusiasm the EcoCab initiative, pedal-powered taxis offering residents and tourists free rides within the downtown core.

Launched in summer 2008 by Go Mobile Media, the project is sponsored by brands eager to prove their green credentials and it is helping reduce carbon emissions and make Toronto a greener city.

The EcoCab runs primarily on a trained driver’s pedal-power, but is supported by a rechargeable electric battery.

So it can reach speeds of up to 12 km per hour on city streets.

The trips are usually short, six-to-twelve blocks, and there are not designed pick up points- so, simply flag one down if you see it going by.

Although many of us would like to see them year round, EcoCabs only ride during summer time.
